A Chinese takeaway Edinburgh can pick up on the way home
There are two ways to take our food home. Ring or order through HungryPanda and it will be ready when you get here. Or walk in, order at the counter and wait while it is cooked, which is what a good few people do at lunchtime when they have twenty minutes and no patience for a menu.
Everything on the list travels. Noodles, fried rice, duck with pancakes, dry pots, the fish. Sauces that matter go in a pot of their own, because sweet and sour poured over the top twenty minutes ago is a different dish from sweet and sour you pour yourself.
Bag it and go up the Bridges, down to the Cowgate, or onto a bus at the stop outside. Eat it on a bench on the Royal Mile if the weather is doing what it does. The duck does not mind.
What to order if you are carrying it
Some dishes are better for the walk than others. Fried rice, chow mein and the roast meat rice dishes arrive exactly as they left. Foo yung and salt and pepper squid are best within minutes of leaving the wok, so they are a picnic rather than a bus ride.
Crispy duck is the one people ask about. It is fine in a box, but it is a different thing with a table under it. Order it for the dining room and take the char siu home.
The mixed platter, £19.50, is a Chinese takeaway Edinburgh can build a night around: salt and pepper ribs, wings, chips, mini vegetable rolls, salt and pepper chicken, and a pot of sweet and sour on the side.
Honey char siu with rice, £15.50, the one that travels best.
Roast duck with rice, £16.50, or half a duck for £23.
Singapore chow mein, £15.50, if you want heat with your noodles.
Mixed platter, £19.50, for a table of people who cannot decide.
Feeding four people from one bag
The mistake people make with takeaway is ordering four mains and no rice. One rice each, or two between three, plus a vegetable on the side, is closer to how a Chinese table works. Add a soup if it is cold outside and you are walking.
For four people, a whole crispy duck, two mains, a vegetable and four rice is generous. Swap one of the mains for a dry pot if the group is hungry. The mixed platter covers the picking-at-it stage before anyone has found a plate.
Tell us how many you are feeding when you ring and we will say if you have ordered too much or too little. Leftovers reheat well the next day if you keep the sauce separate, which is why we pack it that way. The bag will be heavier than you expect.
Prices, VAT and paying at the counter
Every price on the menu includes VAT, whether you eat in or take away. Pay at the counter with cash or card. Visa, Mastercard, American Express and the usual phone payments all work. If you ordered through HungryPanda, pay in the app and give us the order number when you arrive.
There is no need to book to collect. Ring the number, tell us what you want and how many people it is for, and we will tell you when to come. We would rather give you a real time than a hopeful one.
If you are ordering delivery through Uber Eats or Deliveroo, those fees and their charges come from the app rather than from us. We set the food. The app sets the rest.
Collecting, parking and where to wait
The shopfront is at 45 South Bridge, EH1 1LL, a couple of minutes down from the Royal Mile junction and six from Waverley. It is a Chinese takeaway Edinburgh can reach on foot from most of the centre. Buses stop within a minute. If you are coming by car there is on-street parking on Drummond Street and Chambers Street, though you may have to go round the block.
We will tell you a time when you ring. If it is busier than usual we will tell you that too, rather than have you standing at the door watching a waiter walk past you with someone else's duck.
One practical note: a bag with a duck, rice and two mains weighs more than you think. If you are walking back to the New Town, take the bus.
Common questions
Questions we get asked
How long does collection take?
It depends on the hour and what you have ordered. When you ring we will give you a time and we will not pretend it is quicker than it is. Friday between six and eight is the busiest window, so ring before the rush if you can.
Do I have to order online?
No. Ring 0131 563 9054 or walk in and order at the counter. HungryPanda is there if you prefer to tap rather than talk, and it is the collection route we link to from this page. All three end up in the same kitchen.
Can I get everything on the menu to take away?
Yes, the whole list is available for collection, including the roast meats and the dry pots. What we would say is that a few dishes, the crispy duck and anything fried, are better the moment they are cooked, so they reward eating sooner rather than later.
Are takeaway prices the same as eating in?
Yes. It is one menu and one set of prices, and VAT is included either way. Delivery through Uber Eats or Deliveroo can differ, because those apps add their own fees and sometimes set their own prices on the dishes.
