Book a table Edinburgh: online in about a minute

The booking form takes about as long as ordering a coffee. Pick the day, the time and the number of people, put your name, email and a phone number in, and it is done. We confirm by email once we have picked it up.

One honest note about timing. We read bookings during opening hours, so anything sent overnight waits until the door opens at noon. If you have booked for a time the restaurant is shut, the email may take a little longer to reach you. It is not a lost booking.

Walk-ins are welcome and we keep tables back for them. On a Tuesday you will get a seat. On a Friday in August, book.

What happens after you book

You will get an email confirming the date, the time and how many of you are coming. Read it, because if the number is wrong we will set the table for the number in the email rather than the one in your head.

If something changes, ring us on 0131 563 9054. Moving a table is easier a day before than an hour before, and it is much easier than turning up with two extra people and watching us rearrange the room. It is easier for everyone if we know before the table is set than after.

Running late happens. Ring and tell us and we will hold the table for a sensible amount of time. Turn up forty minutes late without a word on a Saturday and we may have given it away, which nobody enjoys.

Tables for nine or more

Online booking stops at eight people. Nine and above comes through the phone on 0131 563 9054, because a larger table is a different job: it needs a plan for where you sit, what you eat and when the food comes out.

We will ask you the number, the time and whether there are children or anyone who cannot eat something. We will tell you what is available and what the table will feel like. If the room cannot take you on the night you want, we would rather say so than squeeze you in.

For a group, it helps to agree the food before you arrive. It is not compulsory, but a table of twelve all choosing separately takes a long time to eat.

The best times to come

Lunch is the quiet end of the day. Noon to two is when the room is calmest and the kitchen is at its quickest, and you can be back out on South Bridge inside forty minutes if that is what you need.

Early evening is the sweet spot for a longer meal. Six o'clock gets you the room before the rush and leaves you finished before the theatre crowd arrives. Half seven onwards is the busiest sitting of the week on a Friday and Saturday.

Book a table. Edinburgh fills up in August and the good slots go first, so it is worth doing on a Monday for a Friday. The rest of the year you can be more relaxed, though we would still rather hear from you than not.

A few things worth knowing

All menu prices include VAT and there is no service charge added at the end. Payment is by cash or card, including Visa, Mastercard, American Express and the usual phone payments. Split bills are fine, though it helps if you tell us at the start rather than the end.

Please let us know of any food allergies when you book or when you sit down. Some sauces and marinades are made ahead, so the earlier we know, the more we can do about it.

If you are coming for a birthday or an anniversary, say so. Nobody is going to sing at you, but we will make sure the timing suits and that there is something at the end if you have brought it. Say it when you book rather than at the end of the meal, and we will have it arranged before you sit down.

Common questions

Questions we get asked

How far ahead should I book?

For a weekday lunch, a day or two is plenty. For a Friday or Saturday evening, a week is sensible, and in August a fortnight is not too early. Larger tables take longer to arrange, so give us more notice if there are more of you.

Can I book for more than eight people online?

No. The online form stops at eight people. Nine or more comes through the phone on 0131 563 9054, because we need to talk about the table, the food and the timing rather than just take a number and hope.

Do you take walk-ins?

Yes, and we keep tables back for people who do not book. The risk is the busiest hours, Friday and Saturday evening and most of August, when the room may already be full. Booking takes a minute and removes the risk.

What if I need to cancel or change my booking?

Ring us on 0131 563 9054 or reply to the confirmation email. Earlier is always easier for us to accommodate, especially for a large table that has been planned around. There is no charge for changing your mind with reasonable notice.
