So many restaurants to choose from in the area, i choose this one because i saw a guy sat on the corner of the street advertising the restaurant. It had plenty of customers, that’s always a good sign and the service and food was fantastic. The salt and pepper chips were the best i have ever had.

Had a great meal at Jimmy’s Express in Edinburgh. The food was delicious, the portions were generous, and the prices were very reasonable. The staff were friendly and welcoming, which made the dining experience even better.
Suzie C. Google review
Loved everything about this restaurant! The food is extremely delicious and the servings are big, making them very much worth the price. In addition, this might just be the best service I’ve ever experienced. I will come here again for that Yang Chow Fried Rice, it was so good!

Excellent service and taste. If you are looking for an alternative from Scotch food, this authentic oriental restaurant is just the best fit for you.

HK-owned spot with great service! Char siu rice + simmered soup = chef’s kiss, free rice refills included. Warm water on hand, New Year oranges too. Friendly to solo, worth a visit!

While visiting Edinburgh, we were craving something spicy and flavorful – that’s when we discovered Jimmy’s Express, and it turned out to be a fantastic find!

I’ve been here so many times. The food is super authentic and service never disappoints.

4 times in 4 days – that says it all. Everything I tried was super tasty: steamed seabass, honey char siu, beef brisket, braised pork belly. Big portions and full of flavor!

Jimmy's Express Reviews

Jimmy’s Express reviews are written by the people who ate here, not by us. What follows is a short selection of the things that come up most often, in their own words. The full set — including the evenings that went wrong — is on Google and on Uber Eats and Deliveroo, where we cannot edit a word of it.

Where to read Jimmy's Express reviews

Jimmy's Express reviews live in three places. Our Google Business Profile is where most of them are, because that is where people go when they have had a good dinner and want to tell someone. The delivery apps carry reviews from people who ordered to their door rather than sat in the room.

We do not police any of them. They are third-party sites, they are not ours to edit, and we would not want to. What you read there is what people thought on the day they came in.

The Google listing also has the photographs, the opening hours and the map, so it is the most useful of the three if you are deciding whether to come.

A handful of the ones we hear most often are further down this page, kept short and attributed, so you can see the shape of the place before you read the whole thing on Google.

What we would want you to judge us on

The duck first. If the skin is not crisp and the meat is not juicy, the rest does not matter much. Then the char siu, the won ton broth, and whether the things that should arrive hot arrive hot.

After that, the ordinary things. Whether the table was ready at the time you booked. Whether somebody told you honestly how long the food would take. Whether the bill matched what you expected, including VAT, with nothing added at the end that nobody mentioned.

That last one comes up more often than you would think in reviews of restaurants generally, and it is easy to get right. Ours is one menu, one set of prices, VAT included.

If we get those things right, the rest of it follows. None of them is difficult, and all of them are noticed when they go wrong.

If something is not right, tell us then

A review written three days later is useful, but a word at the table gets you a new plate. Every kitchen makes mistakes, and the ones that matter are the ones nobody hears about until it is too late to fix anything.

Tell the person serving you. Tell the person at the counter. Ring us the next day on 0131 563 9054 if you would rather not make a fuss while you are sitting there. We are not going to argue with you about it.

The complaint we find hardest to answer is the one that arrives as a one-star review with no detail. Give us the date and the dish and we can actually do something about it.

This is not a request to be nice to us. It is the quickest way to get what you wanted in the first place.

If you would like to leave one

Search for Jimmy's Express on Google and leave it there. It takes a minute, it does not need an account beyond the one you already have, and it helps the next person decide whether to walk down from the Royal Mile.

Specifics are more helpful than stars. Which dish, which evening, whether the room was busy, whether the service matched the food. A review that says a restaurant was amazing and leaves it there does not tell anyone anything.

For delivery, leave it in the app instead. Uber Eats and Deliveroo reviews are read by people deciding where to order at nine at night, and they carry a lot of weight.

We read them all, including the ones that sting.

Common questions

Questions we get asked

Where can I read reviews of Jimmy's Express?

Our Google Business Profile carries most of them, and you will also find reviews on Uber Eats and Deliveroo from people who ordered for delivery. We do not collect or edit them, and this page deliberately does not republish a selection, because a hand-picked quote is not a review.

How do I leave a review?

Search for Jimmy's Express on Google, open the listing and write it there. If your experience was a delivery, the app you ordered on lets you rate the order. Specific detail about the dish and the evening is more useful to the next person than a star rating on its own.

What do you do with negative feedback?

We read it, and if we can identify the evening we look at what happened. If you tell us at the table we can usually fix the actual problem there and then. If you would rather not make a fuss, ring 0131 563 9054 the next day and tell us straight.

Do you have any awards or recognition?

None that we publish. We are a family-run restaurant on South Bridge, judged on the duck, the service and the prices. If that ever changes we will say so on this page rather than putting a badge in the footer.

Read them, then come and disagree

Book a table and judge the duck for yourself, or order collection and eat it at home. Open noon until half nine at 45 South Bridge.

What people say

Jimmy's Express reviews, in their own words

Six that came up more than once: the duck, the salt and pepper tofu, the claypot, and the fact that the room is small enough to hear the next table. Longer quotes are shortened, nothing else is changed.

We come for the roast duck and stay for the char siu. Skin crisp, meat still juicy, and it arrives carved properly instead of on a plate for you to wrestle with.

★★★★☆

Salt and pepper tofu had no business being that good. Service was slow on a Saturday but the food was worth it, and nobody hurried us out of the room.

Dean T., Newington · Dine-in

★★★★★

Claypot chicken and Singapore noodles, ordered at nine on a Tuesday. Hot when it arrived and twenty minutes earlier than the app promised.

Priya K., Marchmont · Delivery

★★★★★

Char siu, egg fried rice and a pot of tea at lunchtime. Back on South Bridge inside half an hour and under fifteen pounds.

Callum R., Old Town · Weekday lunch

★★★★★

Whole duck for six, a table by the skyline mural, and one of us who does not eat pork. Both sorted without a fuss.

Aisha B., Bruntsfield · Group of six

★★★★☆

Won ton soup and salt and pepper chips on a Sunday evening when the rest of the street was shut. Exactly what we wanted.
