Everything asked

Questions, answered properly

Hours, booking, the food, and how delivery works. If your question is not here, the phone number at the bottom of the page gets you a person.

Hours and getting here

What time do you open and close?

Noon until half nine, every day of the week, including bank holidays. The kitchen finishes with the restaurant, so half nine is a real closing time rather than a suggestion.

Do you serve food all afternoon?

Yes. The kitchen runs straight through from noon to 9.30pm, so there is no gap between lunch and dinner.

Where exactly are you?

45 South Bridge, Edinburgh EH1 1LL — on the main road between the Royal Mile and the University, a few minutes from Waverley station.

How far is it from Waverley station?

About six minutes on foot. Come out of Waverley, head up towards South Bridge, and we are on the left before the Royal Mile junction.

Do you take walk-ins?

Yes, and we keep tables back for people who have not booked. Friday and Saturday, and most of August, are the nights worth booking ahead for.

Do you have parking?

There is no parking attached to the restaurant. South Bridge is served by buses and is a short walk from Waverley, so most people arrive on foot.

Is there a step-free entrance?

Yes — see the accessibility page for the detail of the doors, the room and the facilities.

Booking a table

How many people can I book online?

Up to eight. Nine and above comes through the phone on 0131 563 9054, because a larger table is a different job: it needs a plan for where you sit, what you eat and when the food comes out.

How far ahead should I book?

For a weekend, a day or two is plenty. For a Friday or Saturday evening, and in August during the festival, it is worth booking earlier.

What happens after I book online?

You get an email confirmation, usually the same day. Bookings are read during opening hours, so anything sent overnight is picked up when the door opens at noon.

Can I change or cancel a booking?

Yes. Ring 0131 563 9054, or reply to the confirmation email, and tell us the number and the time you actually want.

Can I book for a birthday or an anniversary?

Yes, and say so when you book rather than on the night. We will make sure the timing works and that there is something at the end of the meal if you want it.

Do you take bookings for large groups?

Yes. Group bookings and private dining are arranged over the phone so the table, the food and the timing can be agreed before you arrive.

Do you charge a deposit?

Not by default. If anything applies to your particular booking, it is explained when you book, before anything is held.

Is there a time limit on the table?

No one makes you feel like you have taken the table too long. On a busy Friday the kitchen appreciates a little notice, but there is no clock running.

The food

What kind of Chinese food do you serve?

Hong Kong style cooking: Cantonese roast meats first, then starters and soups, the wok, Sichuan and Hunan dishes, dry pots, and rice and noodles. 174 dishes on one list.

What are the dishes to order first?

The roast duck, the honey char siu, and the aromatic crispy duck with pancakes. Salt and pepper anything is the other thing people come back for.

How spicy is the food?

There are chilli markers from one to four beside the dishes that carry heat, and they mean what they say. If you want it hotter or milder, the kitchen will adjust.

Do you have vegetarian dishes?

Yes — a whole vegetable section, plus tofu dishes such as salt and pepper tofu and mapo tofu. Tell us if you also want to avoid oyster sauce or fish sauce in a vegetable dish.

Do your prices include VAT?

Yes, every price on the menu includes VAT. There is no service charge added to the bill by default.

Can I see the Chinese name of a dish?

Yes. The Chinese name is printed beside the English on the menu, so you can order by the name you know if that is what you grew up with.

What should I do about allergies?

Tell us before you order, every time. We do not publish an allergen table, so the kitchen will talk you through what is in a dish rather than leave you guessing.

Can you cater for a big table with different tastes?

That is most tables. Ordering a spread down the middle works better than everyone choosing separately: a couple of roast meats, a vegetable, something from the wok and a soup feeds a group well.

Collection and delivery

Can I order for collection?

Yes — at the counter, or through HungryPanda. It is quicker than delivery and there is no delivery fee.

Do you deliver?

Yes, through Uber Eats and Deliveroo. The buttons at the bottom of this page go straight to our listing on each app.

Is the whole menu available for delivery?

The full menu is on both apps, with the delivery fee and the timing shown before you pay.

Which dishes travel best?

Anything fried is at its best within minutes, so we would point you towards rice, noodles, stews and roast meats for a journey across town.

Can I order catering for an event?

Yes. Catering, private dining and group bookings are all arranged by phone on 0131 563 9054.

Do you sell gift vouchers?

Yes, restaurant gift vouchers are available — see the gift vouchers page or ask at the counter.

What payment do you accept?

Cash and card, including Visa, Mastercard and American Express.

YOUR QUESTIONS

Chinese Restaurant FAQs

Chinese restaurant FAQs Edinburgh customers actually ask, collected behind a counter over a lot of years: hours, bookings, allergies, delivery, and what to order on a first visit. If your question is not here, ring 0131 563 9054 and ask a person.

The Chinese restaurant FAQs Edinburgh asks most

Where are you. 45 South Bridge, Edinburgh EH1 1LL, between the Royal Mile and the university, six minutes on foot from Waverley station. Look for the doorway rather than the sign, because South Bridge is busy and the frontage is not the largest on the street.

When are you open. Noon until half nine, every day, including bank holidays. There is no closed day and no afternoon gap. If the door is open, the kitchen is working.

Do I need to book. Not usually. Walk-ins are welcome and we keep tables back for them. Friday and Saturday evenings and August are the exceptions, and those are the nights to use the booking form.

Then the questions that need a longer answer, which are below.

Questions about the food

How hot is hot. The menu marks every dish with one to four chillies, and the markers are honest. Four is the sliced fish in chilli oil or a dry pot, and it is not a dare. One chilli is a warm dish that most people will be comfortable with.

Is there vegetarian food. It tops most Chinese restaurant FAQs Edinburgh sends us, and the answer is yes, with more than one proper dish. Salt and pepper tofu, vegetarian spring rolls, aubergines Yuxiang style, pak choi with garlic, sweet and sour mixed vegetables. Tell us when you order and we will point you at what suits.

Allergies. Please let us know of any food allergies when you book or order, and we will check the dish with the kitchen before it goes on. Some sauces and marinades are made in advance, so the earlier we know, the more we can do.

Can you adjust a dish. Sometimes. Ask and we will tell you honestly rather than promise something the kitchen cannot deliver at seven on a Saturday.

Questions about booking and groups

How far ahead should I book. A day or two for a weekday, a week for a Friday or Saturday, and a fortnight in August. Larger tables need more warning because they need planning rather than just a slot.

Can I book more than eight people online. No. RESV stops at eight covers. Nine and above comes through 0131 563 9054, where somebody can talk about the table, the food and the timing with you.

What if we are running late. Ring and tell us. We will hold the table for a sensible amount of time. Turn up forty minutes late on a Saturday without a word and it may already have gone to somebody else.

Do you take deposits. If one is needed for a large booking, we will say so when you book rather than surprise you later.

Questions about collection and delivery

Can I collect. Yes, and the whole menu is available. Ring 0131 563 9054, order through HungryPanda, or come in and order at the counter. We will give you a real time rather than a hopeful one.

Do you deliver. Through Uber Eats and Deliveroo only. We do not run our own delivery service and we cannot take delivery orders over the phone.

Why can I not see a delivery fee here. Because the apps set it, not us. They calculate it from your address and show it before you pay. The delivery area works the same way, and the app will tell you straight away whether it covers you.

What travels best. Rice, noodles, stews and roast meats. Anything fried is better eaten sooner rather than later, and we will say so when you order.

Still stuck? Ask a person

The phone is 0131 563 9054 and it is answered during opening hours. Email is jimmyexpress888@gmail.com and it is checked regularly, with a 48-hour aim for a reply. Both go to the same small team.

If you are asking about tonight, ring. If you are asking about a date next month, either is fine, and email is better for anything with details that need to be in writing.

Questions about a delivery belong with the app, because the order, the fee and the driver are theirs. Questions about the food belong with us, and we would rather hear them before you order than after.

There is also a contact page with the address, the map and the directions, which answers the rest of the Chinese restaurant FAQs Edinburgh people arrive with.

Common questions

Questions we get asked

Do you have a children's menu?

We do not print a separate one, but there is plenty children eat: lemon chicken, sweet and sour chicken, rice, noodles, chips, spring rolls. The chilli markers on the menu tell you what to avoid, and the kitchen can keep a dish mild if you ask.

Is there a dress code?

None at all. Come as you are, whether that is after work, off a train, or back from a walk. Nobody has ever been turned away for what they were wearing, and you will not be the most casually dressed person in the room.

Can I bring my own wine?

No. We have a short wine list starting at £19.95 a bottle, plus beer, spirits and Chinese tea. If you have a particular bottle you wanted, ring ahead and we will tell you honestly whether we can get it rather than have you carry it across town.

Are dogs allowed?

Assistance dogs are always welcome. For other dogs, ring 0131 563 9054 before you come and we will tell you what is possible on the day, rather than have you turn up with a dog and be turned away at the door.

Do you have a step-free entrance?

Ring us before you visit and we will describe the entrance and the room exactly as it is, so you can decide whether it works for you. It is a question worth asking in advance rather than discovering at the door on a busy evening.

Anything else, just ask

Ring 0131 563 9054 during opening hours, or email jimmyexpress888@gmail.com. Bookings, allergies and catering questions are all better answered by a person.
